The ability to create and tweet distinct groups is a major feature lacking from Twitter. This gap has been filled by several third party offerings, as mentioned in last week’s post. Ftags is a newly announced service that takes Twitter groups to a whole new level: You create a tag for your group, describe it, then follow the tag and Tweet only to the tag’s followers. For example, you can set up an ftag about lost dogs:
The “_V1D1″ is the tag you use in your Tweet to let others know your Tweet is about a lost dog. All tweets with this tag will be tracked in fTags. Did you find a dog or are you looking for one? Direct your tweet just to this group! I’m sure you can see the more specific your ftag, the more useful it will be to you and your fellow ftaggers.
Here are some ideas for small business on how to use fTags:
- Pizza toppings – a pizzaria could track people’s favorite pizza toppings, suggest new ones, and create a contest for the most creative toppings. Tweet your contest to the group.
- Mini Storage Tips – a mini-storage business could track (and suggest) tips to move, pack, and prepare items for storage. Offer discount coupons to your followers and taggers.
- County Gas Prices – track and tweet local gas prices. A gas station owner can keep track and Tweet her great prices to the community.
- Local Events – A category for what’s going on about town. Keep up with what’s happening, and let people know your business will be there.
- Chamber of Commerce – If you’re a chamber of commerce (or belong to one), stay in touch with what’s going on and let other chamber members know what you’re doing
Always remember to benefit your followers: a Tweet that’s just selling “stuff” to an audience that doesn’t care makes you look like you’re crying wolf. Pretty soon people will just stop listening.
Do you have any other ideas how you can use this service to promote your business? List them here!
