Twitter is for old people.

by Carol Cole-Lewis on July 14, 2009

OK, so this report may not be statistically valid, but it’s an interesting read nonetheless if you are interested in reaching the teen market.

15-year-old Matthew Robson was lucky enough to land an intern position at Morgan Stanley through Rudolph (his three year old whippet pooch – you’ll have to read the full article for this story!) and was given the assignment by the Internet Research Team to explore how teens use media.

His results are based on 300 of his friends. Here’s some of what Matthew discovered:

  • Teens don’t use Twitter. Too expensive! Texting much cheaper.
  • Teens don’t follow profiles on social networking sites
  • Facebook was the most common social networking site used
  • Teens don’t read newspapers, and instead get their news summaries online
  • Teens don’t pay for music. They stream using sites like last.fm, limewire, blogs or torrents.

Of course, this is the case for 300 of Matthew’s friends in the UK. But I’ll bet if Matthew had a friend here in the US who would repeat the study, the results would be remarkably similar.
