Considering online advertising? If you’re wondering where you should place your ads, you may be interested in today’s post from eMarketer, describing the results of research done by ad network Chitika. The study analyzed the browsing habits of 33 million Internet users over the month of September to take a look at where the most loyal visitors click from. They reported search engines refer 98% of all traffic to websites studied, with only .55% (yes, there’s a decimal point before the first “5″) of traffic coming from social networks.
Does this mean Facebook advertising is probably not a good idea? Not at all!! The study also noted that visitors from Facebook were more loyal than Google visitors, with over one fifth of them returning at least four times over the course of a week. Only 11% of Google visitors had the same loyalty.
So, if you’re interested in developing a tribe, think about Facebook. What’s a “tribe”? It’s people who are deeply connected to your business or brand. These people want leadership, and are looking for you to provide it. My guru, Seth Godin, has a book devoted to this topic, “Tribes, We Need You To Lead Us”. You can get a version of this book from Amazon, or download the free audiobook here. Well worth the read or listen!
A well-focused and well-implemented marketing strategy designed to build customer loyalty should improve your chances of success, regardless of what statistics say.
