Basic Websites

Did you know you don’t need to be a super-hotshot technical expert to create a professional website anymore? Using open source software allows someone with a bit of coding experience to design stunning websites in a fraction of the time. As far as we’re concerned, the best software solution we’ve found for this job is Wordpress using the Thesis theme.

I love hot yoga – the hotter the better. We designed this site to be fun, as well as peaceful.

We did very little to the basic Thesis theme for this site, as we wanted the “blue collar” look a plain theme and a Courier font gives.

California Pacific Sales

The guys as California Pacific Sales wanted an e-commerce site they could maintain themselves. As they have the technical chops for it, we were happy to oblige. We set up the e-commerce, they add the products themselves (though we placed all the products on this page.) We designed the header logo, all the other graphics are from CPS.

Sometimes free themes can be used quite effectively. However, there is almost always some tinkering under the hood necessary to get the site to perform correctly. We had to here (which is why you want someone with coding experience to customize your open source blogging software.)

This site is a mock-up for a new online business. It’s not hosted on a private server – it’s on Wordpress.com. Because of this, there’s not a lot of flexibility with the design (or the ability to add cool widgets) but Wordpress.com works for “just getting something up.” Buy a cheap domain from cheap-domainregistration.com for $9, then redirect it to a Wordpress.com blog and presto, you’re in business!

E-commerce Sites

Did you know over 50% of shopping carts are abandoned because of excessive shipping costs? Along come Mal’s E-commerce + Auctionsinc.com shipping plug-in to the rescue! Here’s why we like this solution:

• You can use any tool you want to create the site (i.e., you’re not limited to a shopping cart theme)
• You can paste the code right into your pages
• It has a real-time shipping cost calculator
• It’s (almost) free ($4.95 a month for the auctionsinc.com plug-in)
• It works great (however, you are limited to only one shipping location)

Dreamweaver

We used to hand-code in a text-based word processor before the wysiwyg editor Dreamweaver came along. Does that date us, or what??!

Did I mention I love hot yoga? This is a site we did for the Bikram Yoga studio in Lower Lake. The clever images are by cartoonist Ed Renfro. We also manage their autoresponder and email list for them.

We did a lot of work on the copy for this site to get it to rank at the top of Google and other search engines. We don’t maintain the site any longer, but we believe it’s still placing pretty high for “cooking team building” and “culinary team building”.

Unitarian Universalist Community of Lake County (“UUCLC”)

This is the website for the Unitarian Universalist faith community we belong to. This site was designed ‘way back in 2000 and we think it still looks pretty good.

Social Media Sites

Facebook Page – Lake County Chamber of Commerce

Did you know only real people are allowed to have a Facebook profile? You actually need a Facebook Page if you want to promote your business there.  We set this page up for the Lake County Chamber, and use the Chamber’s emails to update the page’s status line. This action also automatically updates the Chamber’s Twitter feed (Lakecochamber – we set this up for them, too, using Twitter’s basic style format.)

Ning Community – KPFZ Radio

The trend is to move away from generic social media sites to ones which are more specific to an interest group. Ning is what’s called a “white label” site. This means you can pick design elements and create your very own social community right on Ning. This is a social network we set up for the local radio station KPFZ (88.1 on your FM dial when you’re in Lake County!)

TnT Storage

TnT Storage Blog

We did a social media planning session and some technical education for TnT Storage. This blog is the result. They did all the coding, copy writing, and graphics. The blog reflects a fun and whimsical brand image that enhances the community feeling of their business (and also generates social media traffic.) Stop in to one of their Lake County locations – the coffee and cookies are free, and you’ll always get a friendly smile and helpful service!
